Interface, American Forests Join Forces to Plant Trees for Years of Service
It's been a green year for Interface who just this year launched their first Earth Share campaign nationwide and is now partnering with American Forests for an exciting new employee recognition program. Associates now have the option to contribute to the environment by choosing to have trees planted in recognition of their years of service in lieu of receiving a gift. Interface recently purchased from American Forests a "bank" of 5,000 trees in an area of the Tahoe National Forest owned by the U.S. Forest Service where they have agreed to not cut the trees in perpetuity. The purchase establishes a "virtual" area within the forest called the "Interface Forest," which covers approximately 20 acres with 250 trees per acre. To date, six associates have contributed trees in recognition of their years of service for a total contribution/planting of 698 trees!

    Capacity Campaign Update
As our three-year, $350,000 capacity campaign draws to a close in June of 2004, Earth Share is very close to reaching our goal. The money raised goes to support Earth Share's capacity to cultivate Georgia businesses to include the environment as a choice in their workplace giving campaigns as well as to encourage them to include the environment in their corporate value structure and philanthropic practices. If you would like information on how to support the Earth Share of Georgia 2002-2004 Capacity campaign with a tax-deductible contribution, please contact Elicia Fritsch at 404.873.3173 or elicia@earthsharega.org.

You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me Lucille
This month Earth Share of Georgia bid farewell to their long-time Executive Director and friend, Alice Rolls. After 11 years at Earth Share, she has accepted a new position as Executive Director of Georgia Organics. Alice and its founding members created the Environmental Fund for Georgia, incorporated in 1992, as a non-profit federation of environmental groups whose purpose was to provide an alternative and sustainable source of funding for the environmental community. During Rolls' tenure, Earth Share of Georgia and its sister federations were integral in passing legislation to expand the State and Federal employee campaigns to include other federations. This change in legislation was key to increasing the federations' revenues by more than 200% in some cases and subsequently providing vital funding to hundreds of charities in Georgia and across the nation. In 2000, Rolls was a key negotiator of the Fund's affiliation with Earth Share, adding under its umbrella a prestigious list of nearly 40 national and international environmental organizations. Alice Rolls is synonymous with Earth Share and her contribution will not be forgotten. To reach Alice at Georgia Organics call 404-873-3034 or email, alice@georgiaorganics.org.

Leapin' Lizards! You Mean Georgia Doesn't Have an Official State Amphibian?
Help the students & teachers at Armuchee Elementary School in Rome to get the Green Tee Frog added as the State Amphibian. You may be saying to yourself, "What does the State Amphibian have to do with me & who cares anyway?" Well, our slippery little friend has the great gift of being an excellent indicator of air & water quality due to their porous skin. Read more from the actual proposed legislation. Then read the article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and vote 'YES.'

Nothing truly valuable arises from ambition or from a mere sense of duty; it stems rather from love and devotion toward men and toward objective things.--Albert Einstein

In a single lifetime, the average American will throw away an average of 90,000 lbs. of trash. What a waste! From the supermarket to the compost pile, the power to eliminate waste is ours. Consider these facts:

•Recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to light a 100-watt light bulb for four hours. (US EPA)
•That same glass container will take 1 million years to decompose!(California Waste Management)
•More than 3.2 million tons of electronic waste is laid to rest in landfills each year. TVs and computers can contain an average of 4 pounds of lead. (US EPA)
•One ton of recycled paper saves 3,700 pounds of lumber and 24,000 gallons of water. (US EPA)
That'll make you think twice before tossin' that beer bottle! To find recycling facilities information in your area visit www.earth911.org.
